All tuned up (Wszystko gra) text by Anna Czerwińska-Rydel, published by Wytwórnia, Warszawa 2011, 36 pages, hardback, 280 x 230 mm, ISBN: 978-83-931412-1-0, 5+ All tuned up is the winner of the 2012 BolognaRagazzi Award in the Non Fiction category. This original form of music instruction, exceptional in its literary and visual qualities, takes as its framework the presentation of a symphonic orchestra just before the concert, when the instruments are being tuned. The book’s outstanding power of artistic expression is truly mesmerizing. The cover itself shows a surprisingly muscular trombonist who appears to be the philandering type (his sleeveless vest partly exposes his broad torso), looking like a New Orleans musician. This association points the reader to the background context of the birth of modern popular culture. Introducing pop-culture icons into the world of classical music (the main subject of the book) is only one example of integrating incongruities that seem to be impossible to combine, which underlies the originality of the author’s style. Jury (Bologna Ragazzi Award): This book presents us with an authentically different graphic tradition from our own, marking a break no less powerful than the Gutenberg revolution. The illustrations do not hail from just one genealogy; they have not been created with reference to just one artistic school or tradition. Elements from ancient styles, snippets of the most recent visual expressionism, and passing references to a wealth of authors, eras, hybrid styles and traditions have been harness with consummate skill to put sound and rhythm into graphic form. Everything is bound together by a unifying element: a lightness of touch, that ineffable and disquieting lightness of touch so dear to Italo Calvino.
The numerous references ironically left as clues on the pages beg to be studied and classified. However, the sheer novelty of this book defies all critical assault. The graphic narrative often reveals a playful freshness that is difficult to place. Refined yet joyously carnivalesque, its world is a children’s playground. review (in polish) http://www.instytutksiazki.pl/pl,ik,site,6,4,27167.php www.wytwornia.com Read Less
