‘Akhar’ is a type-design project for URWDesign and Development, a typefoundry based in Hamburg, Germany. URW Global is a project, which is trying to support all languages for a version of Helvetica released by URW, called Nimbus Sans.
Given the vernacular diversity the explosion of the rapidly growing traditional media, television, newspapers and magazines, has caused a more urgent and pressing need for quality typefaces and language support for the diversity of scripts. For this reason and the purpose of this project, I have designed the Nimbus Sans Gurmukhi. Besides, the the fascination for Punjabi culture, the added challenge of learning a new script topped with my love for type and Swiss Design, this project seemed like the perfect blend of opportunity, challenge, and learning.
My research included understanding the script and the letterforms using reed pens and brushes, and reading up on the evolution of the Gurmukhi script. The project deliverables consist of a type specimen booklet, a newspaper design, posters, postcards, and stickers. Read Less
