Special project with Malaysia's legendary cartoonist, Dato' Lat for his AirAsia A320 signature plane.
AirAsia Lat Plane 2009 From the drawing board to tarmac- snippets of recollection on working with Dato' Mohd Nor Khalid, famously known as Lat, Malaysia's living legend cartoonist on his plane livery up until the unveiling event.
(First meeting 9/9/2009) I was thrilled when boss gave the assignment to work with Lat on the livery. Didn't know what to expect, but everything turned out to be awesome :)
Design process- (1) & (2) Using markers, Lat draw and ink the illustrations, (3) After revisions, I scan them, clean up, and color, (4) Edit to fit accordingly the Airbus A320 livery standards
After weeks of design revisions and 5 drafts, this is the final livery design

As funny and colorful as his cartoons are, Lat is also serious when working on the visuals, esp. the DETAILS- stroke thickness, color correction, shape sizes, aesthetic values, etc.
The idea was to make it look simple, effective and clean with a touch of modern-classic feel. This was achieved with the red line on the windows that properly placed his celebratory cartoon characters. Charcoal-grey was used for a 'soothing-effect' that invites passengers to look closely for details
Lat said, "I want the characters and storyboard to reflect the culture, and the way of life of ASEAN people as what AirAsia has grown to become. My vision is for the people of ASEAN to identify with the characters on the plane."
(Plane launch 17/11/2009) AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes, Dato Lat, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, Sir Bob Geldof and AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani with the cabin crew
Some of the things I learned from Lat are- Just do whatever that interests you most and makes you happy. Don't give a rat-ass about what others think and be passionate and have tonnes of fun while doing it! It will show in your work and it'll be a good product for others to use.
