“Open are the double doors of the horizon / Unlocked are its bolts”. This refrain, from Act 1 of
the opera Akhnaten by Philip Glass, is taken from original texts that were written in the reign of
Akhenaten, the Egyptian pharaoh who acclaimed the sun as a god. The refrain was accompanied
by the breathlessly forward-driving repetitions of Minimal Music and it seems almost as though
it had been written to underscore the photographs from Björn Abelin’s new series Apocalypse,
just as the film Koyaanisqatsi was so beautifully transported by the music of Philip Glass.

This is an excerpt from the text written by the german writer and critic
Christiane Stahl and is included in my portfolio Apocalypse.
