Year of the Rat Red Packet Design

Red packets symbolise luck and good fortune, and are usually gifted to younger children by married adults during the Chinese New Year. Mandarin oranges are used as a primary form of greeting and well wishes during the festive season. While they are sold in baskets and boxes, orange handbags are a go-to when visiting the homes of family and friends.

These red packets and orange handbags were designed for Boogle Group in 2020, the Year of the Rat, with the use of playful puns on the designs of red packets. In chinese text, 'Rat', '鼠' is pronounced similarly to "count', '数', hence the idioms indicating "Uncountable amounts of cash, happiness, and luck".

The main colours used in this packaging design were golden-orange and bold red. These colours represent a lifelong gift of great health, wealth, and fortune. Elements of traditional Chinese coins (circle in shape with a square hole in the middle) were also used to create the look of a peony flower– Known as the people's favourite blossom of the season according to Chinese culture.
