In the last months I had the pleasure to work on the Corporate Design of the freshly founded start-up Terranigma Solutions GmbH. The young team of geoscientists works on open, innovative, and digitally enhanced ways to conduct  3D geological modeling. Therefore, the design was founded on three key elements that reflect their efforts and goals:  A better understanding geology, thinking out of the box, and achieving both through the future-driven digital solutions developed by Terranigma.

To understand what Terranigma is working on, I also had to learn about geological modeling. This little infographic illustrates the main components of a typical structural geomodel. Datapoints are the initial input to a geomodeling software such as GemPy (which was originally created by the Terranigma team). Based on these,  the geological layers and faults can be computed and visualized. In some cases,  topography can be included, resulting in a map of the geological units outcropping at the surface. 

Geological data is often complex, sparse and noisy. We can never really “look into” the subsurface. This is why geological models are inherently uncertain.  The team at Terranigma embraces the presence of uncertainty and is working on novel methods to better quantify, visualize and deal with crucial model uncertainties. They aim to help geoscientists in understanding such complexities about the subsurface. This is also  why we chose "unraveling complexity" as their startup’s tagline.
The logo design emerged from three main points: The team at Terranigma tries to always think outside the box, and they want to encourage other geoscientists to do the same. The open box represents not only the mind but also a screen, as future technologies such as virtual and augmented reality will free geomodels from the limits of a regular computer screen. Combining the box with the stratigraphic layers, which the earth is composed of, creates a harmonic combination of geometric and natural forms, technology and nature. As Terranigma is working on very specialized, innovative, and groundbreaking solutions, we added a little signature in the bottom left corner. This highlights the unique expertise of the team, and balances design of the logo. ​​​​​​​
