The design to the right is Tlaloc, a water deity who represented both regenerative and destructive forces. He was an important deity, and the "goggle eyes" and terraced patterns are distinctive elements.
These paintings are two from a series of eight paintings inside Kiva Cave. Note how neither has a complete set of eyes, and must rely on the other to gain full sight. This representation of duality is a recurring theme throughout many of these pictographs.
In addition to Tlaloc, another important deity is Quetzalcoatl. The conical/plumed hat with jaguar/feathered serpent motifs are hallmarks of his depiction, as seen on the painting to the right.
One of the most interesting design motifs are the depictions of clouds. Above the bird in flight, the terraced designs represented clouds, with two curved lines indicating the sun. An abstract yet crystal-clear depiction, one of my favorite design choices in these works.
All together now! Thanks for stopping by, these ancient artists were masters of their craft and it was such a great experience to learn about them as I was working on this. Hoping to continue this in future installments, but cheers for now!
