John Stezaker: Case Study 1

JOHN STEZAKER
CASE STUDY 1 // EXPERIMENTATION
John Stezaker is a conceptual artist. He uses images found in books, magazines and postcards and captures documentations of truth, purveyor of memory and symbols of modern culture.
His style is creating collages with clean cuts to express the relationship between the images.
TASK:
- To create a 3-5 series of images using non-traditional and traditional methods based on our study of the experiment intent for a campaign using his style

CAUSE
In the eyes of a person with body dysmorphia

INSIGHT
Their perspective is different from yours

CONCEPT
To show exaggerated images of people's features overlapping their reflection in the mirror

OBJECTIVE
To show people that flaws don't define who you are

MESSAGE
" When will my reflection show who I am inside? "
PROCESS
Firstly, I went on to look for images of female and male as Body Dysmorphia does affect both and I wanted to make sure it is both represented. As I knew I wanted images that reflects another image, I had a little photoshoot with a mirror reflecting another image.
After taking the photos, I went on to Photoshop to put the black and white filter on. I wanted to show the contrast through the black and white images against the coloured images.
After I have printed them, I went on to cutting and pasting the images. I also went on to scan using my phone as my printer had broken ( sad ) .
I knew that I wanted to make sure that I also wanted to show that these are their perspective and their thoughts. I used Photoshop to add blur and noise to create that effect. I also added some saturation to the coloured photos as I wanted there to be a higher contrast which sadly can't be scanned perfectly with my phone.
FINAL IMAGES
The coloured images with the exaggerated features against the black and white image just help to create a contrast and also exaggerate the idea even more. I wanted to show the perspective of someone who has body dysmorphia. It's not meant to say that these flaws are ugly and what defines them - it is meant to show that they have flaws that they imagine to be exaggerated yet it's not who they really are outside and inside.
REFLECTION
This was a really fun experience as I really enjoy expressing different emotions, perspectives and feelings through different media. I really wanted to show here what people with body dysmorphia sees when they look into a mirror. It may not exactly be the same as the images itself but it's the idea of how they see their reflections with exaggerated or imaginary flaws. However, I also wanted to portray here that flaws are not necessarily always what's ugly or something that defines who you are on the inside.

Have A Nice Day :)
