Ancient Egyptian Textiles

Textiles were used by the ancient Egyptians throughout their lives, beginning in childhood and ending in burial. In daily life, they served many functions. They were used as clothing, protecting people from the heat during the summer and cold in the winter. Household articles, such as lamp wicks, furnishings, and covers, were also made from textiles. On boats, textiles were used to make sails and also rope. In the economic sphere, textiles could be exchanged for other goods.
Textiles were also important to the rituals performed in temples. They were presented as offerings to the gods and goddesses. In funerary practices, textiles served many purposes. During the mummification process, linen was used to pack the body. It was also wrapped around the deceased’s body. This process was intended to preserve the body so that the deceased could enjoy an afterlife. Textiles were also placed in tombs as offerings, including clothes and furnishings, and were used to wrap mummified foodstuffs.
