Bikram is a form of yoga developed by guru Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s. The yoga approach consists of a strict sequence of 26 poses and breathing exercises. Specific breathing techniques accompany certain poses to oxygenate different muscles in the body, encourage mental clarity, and reduce the physiological effects of stress. All classes begin with a Pranayama breathing exercise that combines deep inhalations and exhalations with the movement of the head and arms.

Poses that focus on expanding the chest are often performed simultaneously with the 80/20 breathing technique. In this exercise, the lungs should be filled before starting the pose. Only 20 percent of the air should be released for the duration of the pose. The Kapalabhati breathing technique, which encourages short, forceful exhalations, is used at the end of every session.
