black lives matter: typography experiment
these verses were originally written in Punjabi by the Sufi poet Khwaja Ghulam Farid (1845-1901), referring to the love story of Laila and Manjnun.
in Arabic, ‘Laila’ means ‘night’, which is probably why she is described as dark-skinned.
this is my visual translation of his beautiful poem, written in the midst of the BLM Movement, tracing Laila’s face, in hopes that we see the world through Majnun’s eyes some day.
