Whelpdale Vegan Chocolate Bar Illustrated Wrappers
I was commissioned by the Louisville based chocolatiers Whelpdale Chocolates to come up with a complete redesign of their packaging for their mainline range of vegan bars, what you'll see below are completely hand drawn packaging telling the story of the guy behind the chocolate - Gary Whelpdale - and how he came to find himself as the head of his own chocolate company.
It was a real pleasure to work on these images, I took great pains to get every aspect to my satisfaction, I hadn't done much product design before and wanted to have my own spin on it, I wanted people to see these and feel like each bar was worth having, as if it was it's own distinct experience, to tell the story of the taste through the imagery and colours.

Below: Here is the initial colour roughs I made for each of the bars - as you'll see a lot changed from this to the finals, Gary wears the same clothing in each of these as initially I wanted it to have that consistency, that people would recognise him as a cartoon character, but the company wanted different looks so each bar stood out more, eventually I realised that we could have some elements of clothing remain consistent, like his shoes, but his outfit could change to reflect the environment around him. Also I didn't know at the time that Gary had a beard!
