WORLDWIDE NIGHT
Populated settlements highlighted in light yellow over a worldwide digital elevation model coloured in a night-style gradient.
Data source: GHSL, EEA, Natural Earth, NASA     Software: QGIS
In order to compare, the actual lights are provided by NASA using a composition of several satellite photos.
After resizing both rasters to the same resolution and binarising the values, we can just perform the difference in order to compare them. Green areas represent zones with relatively intense lights compared to the population density (roads, airports, service or industrial areas, etc.), while red areas represent the opposite: areas with a relatively low urban development compared to population.
