Batiste Dry Shampoo: A Midsummer's Night Dream

Batiste Dry Shampoo
Brief

Batiste's brief was to create a trend-led graphic identity for a limited edition range of hair products. Using only vectors, the creative challenge was to design four new graphic identities along with its fragrances to fit into its existing range of products.

Concept

The concept behind ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was that most products in the market either choose to go with embodying personalities or certain fragrances. In order to truly make this a special limited edition set, the team decided to use the bottles in the series to tell a story. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was chosen because Shakespeare is one of the most famous authors in history, and a few lines in A Midsummer Night’s Dream caught our attention:

“Flower of this purple dye | Hit with cupid’s archery | Sink in the apple of his eye” each of these lines were interpreted and used to design a bottle, with the remaining bottle signifying the entire “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Most cosmetic brands and personal grooming products use names derived from a certain mood or type of scent, and thus to stand out from the rest, we decided to deviate from the norm and use a scene from a story instead.
Based on the identity branding for the package, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream, purple and blue were used as the main colours to symbolise mystery and the night (with it being a ‘dream’ at night). Fairies were added to lend an enchanted feel to the design, as well as a touch of whimsy.

Bottle 01: Midsummer Night’s Dream
Shampoo Scent: Summer Night

Bottle 02: Flower of This Purple Dye
Shampoo Scent: Wild Flowers

Drawing inspiration from the words “flowers” and “purple dye”, a flower field was created on a field of purple. The styling of the logo and trees were kept consistent throughout all the bottles so as to identify the bottle as part of the series.
Bottle 03: Flower of This Purple Dye
Shampoo Scent: Scent of Love - Roses

The story of Cupid is a tale familiar to us: a cherub with his bow and arrow, bringing couples together. To reflect the feelings of love associated with the arrival of Cupid and his bow, the colours of this bottle are warm, utilising colours like red and orange to evoke that feeling.

Bottle 04: Sink in The Apple of His Eye
Shampoo Scent: Sweet Apple

The orange and red tones signify hope that she will someday be the apple of her loved one’s eye, which in accordance to the scene that was interpreted for this series, would happen rather soon. However, she does not know and thus looks wistfully at that great apple, which symbolizes his eye.
