Calendar Design
November 2010
This project is a completed solution to a design problem assigned to me during the Fall 2010 semester at OU. The specifics were really open ended, it simply stated to design a functioning calendar in a way that one wouldn't typically expect. I was to incorporate an element of time passing to illustrate the different months of the year. I chose influential 20th century designers and movements. The project consists of three 8x24 inch panels; each panel contains 4 months. Each month showcases a designer I found relevant, and each of the three panels represents a broad movement or era in the history of Graphic Design. Each month is inspired by or directly incorporates works by the respective artist.

The first panel focuses on early dadaists, constructavists and photomontage artists reacting to political and social unrest in Europe. Fragmented thoughts, color and shape reflect the times. The second panel moves to the post war Swiss or international schools of thought, a direct and opposite reaction to the previous movements and wars. This new style focused on structure, order and neutrality. They relied heavily and pioneered grid system and neutral serif typefaces. The last and final panel moves to American designers who's distinct styles spanned from the late 50's to early 80's, maybe even to present. A more relaxed take on design, distanced far enough from the turbulent start of the century,  they incorporated many elements from the previous movements and pushed creative boundaries further. The only panel that seems a bit out of place would be December (Stefan Sagmeister), I think we're too close to analyze the present; for the sake of completing the assignment and satisfying my professor I went ahead and stuck it in there anyway.
