Swinburne University of Technology's Innovation Precinct is an innovation ecosystem that supports ideas, big and small, with the aim of delivering long-term positive impact. They invited Stray Orbit to collaborate with them on a unique collateral project that would encourage new customers to connect with their services through a series of educational, interactive and playful printed items.

Our approach was to combine three disparate items into a single piece that could start as a booklet, then evolve into an interactive game and finish as an inspirational visual that also doubled as an invitation to spark & test new ideas.

Using the central component, an innovation journey map, individuals could explore how the Innovation Precinct can help tailor the incubation and growth of their idea into a fully fledged product or service that can launch their start-up straight into the marketplace and beyond.

BRIEF - SPRINT - DEVELOP - ART!

After gaining insight into the project and brief at hand, we started from the beginning; defining what innovation is and what causes it. This helped us understand what sort of stimulus would lead people to the Innovation Precinct and why this resource would help them understand the opportunities at hand. Image 1 below is a taste of the development work undertaken to understand at which point in their innovation journey people would and should come across the collateral item and what purposes it would satisfy.

From here, we researched devised three possible creative directions to explore including the maze below (image 2). Finally, it was decided that a linear journey with interactive items would best communicate the resources and opportunities at hand in a playful and clear way.

The final step was to refine, refine and refine! All content and graphic elements were brought together from sketch to final illustration to print and digital ready content.
