From Sketch to Complete:
Working process from start to finish of New York Times Magazine. JUNE 14, 2009.

One day, we received a Email from Arem Duplessis, Senior Art Director of the New York Times Magazine.
Email title is 'Cover Illustration'. And it included the PDF with NY Times logo and the details about the project - Infrastructure special issue, which about the various infrastructures in the city, from water pipes to airplanes. He would like us to draw a detailed illustration in IC4 style. Viewer can keep watching it for 5 minutes instead of 5 seconds.

I draw the ideas on notebooks with pencils. After I came up with ideas, I started the sketch work on computer.

I set the resolution at a low level for my relax working at the beginning.

After the completion of rough sketch. I adjusted by moving or scaling the building as if I was designing the architecture.

After I received the director's OK reply, we started drawing more complex finishing line in higher-resolution.

I used Photoshop. The brushes are depends on the illustration, and the line width was around 3pt at that time.

I printed out for confirm sometime. And then I changed the position of the highway in front.

Finally, drew the texture to complete the line drawing. I emailed the director again with the work for the progress confirm.
But He said it's OK as finish image.

He said it has already completed with B/W lines. But as I originally planned to color it, so I started coloring with digital watercolor.

I Started coloring from the big areas. And I decided colors while painting roughly. I set the light shines from the left because this book opens from the left-hand side.

I painted carefully while paying attention to the red and blue color scheme.

After painting the base, I added Shadows and Lights to create the texture to the finish.

NY Times Magazine Cover / finish
In the end, B/W was adopted because the line drawing has stronger impact and it was differentiated from the other magazines.
