Holly Wore A Cross To Ward Them Off

This was my final project for Introduction to Ceramics. The only requirements were that it was to be multi-media and wall mounted.
I began with song lyrics from The Hold Steady, who always inspire me. Their lyrics have always resonated with me.
I stretched my own 50 inch by 28 inch canvas, collaged it with bible pages and clear coated it at that stage. I carved intricate blackletter characters out of clay, which took three full 12+ hour days of work. I then fired and glazed them, then coated them with black matte oven/grill spray paint, then epoxied them to the surface of the canvas/bible pages. I once again coated the piece with clear coat at this stage.
I applied to install this piece in a setting that felt truly fitting of the tone and style of the piece, in a secluded place with beautiful exposed brick on the RMCAD campus. This required drilling into the brick in order to secure two screws in it to hang the canvas. I also provided my own warmer lighting created by a heating lamp bulb & stained glass style bulbs, once again, feeling that this light set a fitting tone for the style of the piece and its setting.
Process images of the hand-carved blackletter characters to be found below.
