How to easily improve your
food photography at home
Food is the most Instagrammed content every day, bringing food photography into the homes of just about everybody. Learning how to take good pictures of food has become paramount for Instagrammers to engage with as many followers as possible. Food photography can be quite difficult as you are the chef, stylist and now conducting a photo shoot all yourself. Hopefully these tips on food photography can help you with your food photos.
Mind your viewpoint
Many items will look great from the side, but switching to a top down approach can give new life to the image. Think about the composition. If it's a stack of pancakes for example, those might look great from the side to show off the syrup pouring down the side. The yoghurt above shows a nice flow of color taking your eyes from the top left down and to the right of the image.
A large diffused light source is going to give you your best food photographs. Easiest solution? Next to a window of course. You can pick up a diffuser for fairly cheap to soften the shadows , but a large thin white sheet will work between the window and the subject. Lighting is paramount not just when shooting food, but when shooting anything, so this one's important. Filling your shadows makes a huge difference, so it's worth investing in some cheap foam core to put on  the opposite side of your subject to fill in some of those pesky shadows. You'll be surprised at the difference it makes!
Lines and negative space
Especially with the top down approach, use utensils and ramekins to fill negative space and use the ramekins to fill color with peripheral ingredients to add pops of color and texture to the image.
