Damask / 150 years of fine table linen in the Netherlands

With the disappearance of the tradition to extensively and festively cover the table with linen, the knowledge about damask is also disappearing. Reason enough for the TextielMuseum to present its damask collection in book form.
In this edition Caroline Boot, curator of the TextielMuseum, brings this beautiful and comprehensive collection to life. From designs from around 1875 to the contemporary table linen that is produced in the TextielLab of the museum.
The damask, with Art Nouveau designs by decorative artists such as Chris Lebeau and Theo Nieuwenhuis and the Amsterdam School designs by Jaap Gidding and Cor Mus, is one of the top textile designs. After the war, Bauhaus student Kitty van der Mijl Dekker caused a furore with her modern designs.
The cover shows Chris Lebeau's napkin 'Grapes' one on one. Due to the special folding method in combination with UV varnish, the cover seems to be the real napkin. An important property of damask on the cover has also been made visible because the front of the printed sheet shows the design in positive and the negative shape is visible on the back.
