GRA43_1 SPREAD THE WORD
We were asked to create a magazine spread for either Rolling Stone or GQ Magazine. The idea was that our spread would work as an introduction to a long-read article, a self chosen topic. Deep research was essential to fully understand what we are communicating and to have a
working visual storytelling.

"The Art of Album Covers / The Flip Side"

My chosen topic is all about album covers. The most iconic ones though, like from the 60s and 70s. I believe most recognise the yellow banana cover, the four dudes walking over the crossway, or the swimming naked; but who knows the stories behind these legendary covers? I wanted to research how these were made, what their stories are. In today's world most of them are made with photoshop so no much fun guessing there. However back in the days they had mesmerising techniques to get the work done. I chose to make my spread for Rolling Stone Magazine since they formed because of rock and roll
and music in the first place.

My idea formed of making a collage of the actual covers but making them "melt" into each other perfectly,
to create a trippy landscape.
These are the albums I ended up using for my magazine spread collage.

1. Miles Davis "Bitches Brew"
2. Pink Floyd "Dark Side Of The Moon"
3. Nirvana "In Utero"
4. Santana "Abraxas"
5. Led Zeppelin "Led Zeppelin"
6. Led Zeppelin "Houses of the Holy"
7. The Jimi Hendrix Experience "Axis: Bold As Love"
8. The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
9. Nirvana "Nevermind"
10. Joy Division "Unknown Pleasures"
11. Pink Floyd "The Wall"
12. King Crimson "In The Court of the Crimson King"
13. Pink Floyd "Atom Heart Mother"
14. Pink Floyd "The Division Bell"
15. The Velvet Underground & Nico "The Velvet Underground & Nico"
16. The Beatles "Abbey Road"
17. Elton John "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
18. Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here"
19. The Clash "London Calling"
20. Frank Zappa "Hot Rats"
Now that my collage was ready I needed to ad the article title "The Flip Side" together with a
short introduction teaser. I tried different ideas and ways, first with the frame and speech bubble, then inside a black frame surrounding the collage, until I reached my final decision of using the iconic Pink Floyd "The Wall" lettering.
