Saving the Kereru

Flight on the Wild Side
How do you help the public see the danger window strike poses our fine-feathered friends? From a flying bird’s eye view, virtually of course! In collaboration with Wildbase Recovery, we designed and produced a 3D animation to coincide with The Great Kereru Count (2019).

The challenge: when we heard our beloved native birds were suffering from window strike - the terrible phenomenon of birds crashing into windows with disastrous outcomes, we flew into action. We love our native birds, the Kereru a particular favourite. Style, grace (well, except when too many fermented cherries have been consumed) and a luminescent coat to rival Joseph. And that cooing sound.

The response: Kereru are amongst the highest number of patients at Wildbase Hospital. With the growing popularity of contemporary home designs with floor-to-ceiling glass and debate raging about the best way to prevent window strike for our native birds... We decided to show what it's like from the Kereru's perspective and let people decide for themselves.
