Hops & Barley by Jocu Playing Cards

A custom deck of playing cards for lovers of fine ales, craft beers and best bitters.
Is there anything better than a nice, cold beer?
Inspired by our favourite beers from around the world, Hops & Barley is the third custom deck of playing cards by Jocu after the success of Fillide and The Green Man.
Whether your tipple is a crisp pilsner, a full-bodied real ale, a hop-monster APA or a pint of the 'Black Stuff' our third playing card project celebrates the ancient process of beer-making, with a style based on the ingredients and iconic equipment used in the brewing process.
So, what it'll it be?

Hops & Barley - the two primary ingredients in all styles of beer apart from water and yeast. So important was the definition that in sixteenth-century Germany it was enshrined in law under the name Reinheitsgebot or 'purity law'. From then on these would be the only four ingredients permitted to be included in any drink to be known as 'beer'.
Nowadays other grains can be used, such as corn in classic American lagers or wheat in Belgian Weiss-bier. However the principles remain almost identical and the vast majority of beer styles are produced the same way they have been for hundreds of years.

STANDARD EDITIONS
55 fully custom playing cards by Jocu designer Alessandra Gagliano
52 cards, two jokers and an ad card
Available in Pale Gold Pilsner and Deep Amber Ale
Printed on slimline card stock with premium B9 linen finish by Cartamundi
Matte tuck boxes made from recycled beer mats + with opaque foil colouring
Designed in Italy, cards printed in Belgium and boxes printed in Italy.

The standard edition of Hops & Barley comes in one of two styles - Pale Gold Pilsner and Deep Amber Ale. These colours represent the lighter and darker shades of most popular beers, from lagers, pilsners and weiss-biers on the lighter side to the darker shades of bitters, ales and IPAs.
The boxes themselves are a special paper stock made from hops, barley, yeast and other by-products of beer production and specifically designed in various shades of beer. The natural texture shows minor variations in colour that resemble bubbles in a cold pint.

The design is printed with opaque white foil layering for a crisper, clearer, textured finish in the exact colours we want. This is then finished with embossing the logo and the design.
Thanks to hitting our first stretch goal they will also include internal printing and this became foil by hitting our stretch goal.
THE ACES
The aces in Hops & Barley follow a classic style, but with larger central pips for playability. Unlike our previous decks, the Ace of Spades is the prominent, customised and flagship ace and each deck features a completely different design paying tribute to the beer that inspired the variant.  Two Ace of Spades are included, one in black and white and one in colour.
Jocu Standard Courts
Hops & Barley is the first deck to feature our Jocu Standard Courts. This means all the Kings, Queens and Jacks have been completely redrawn based on classic standard iconography, giving a familiar yet custom feel. These courts have different colour palettes for each variant.
