About Animography
Animography is a type-foundry that specialises in animated typefaces. These animated typefaces comes as Adobe After Effects files. They are easy to use, customizable and scalable without any loss of quality.

Franchise Animated
Unlike our other typefaces, Franchise Animated is an animated typeface by 1 type designer and 110 animators. For this specific animated typeface we have round up 110 talented animators from all over the world. We asked each one to pick a glyph and animate it using no more than 4 colors, 25 frames and a 500 x 600 px canvas in Adobe After Effects. The animators had complete freedom to work their magic within those 25 frames. The result is a wide variety of styles and techniques. The color palette and letterforms tie it all together.

The file contains all the keyframes, expressions and artwork from the artists. This makes it a great learning source for motion students and professionals.

The Process
This project is unlike any other animated typeface in our collection. Normally an idea arises, and after some rounds of sketching and experimentation the animated typeface is produced. Mostly all glyphs are animated in the same manner, forming a coherent animated type system.

In this case we wanted to create something a bit more surprising. We searched the web for a suitable typeface and settled with Franchise by Derek Weathersbee. After getting him on board we invited animators we admire and asked them to recommend other animators. Each animator was assigned one glyph, and got a template and a set of rules. Because the animators had a lot of creative freedom, the endresult was still very unclear at this stage.

Phase two was a the daunting task of coordinating all the contributors. Making sure they followed the rules, delivered their files on time. The delivery deadline was postponed a few times, and converting everything back to one single CS5 file took some time as well.

When all the individual animations were finally added to the master file, everything had to be cleaned up. This included deleting all kinds of unused layers, effects, solids, etc. After that the file was reorganised, color coded and meticulously named, making it a neat file for end users to work with.

And finally all the promo material could be made. For this, Clark Rhee and Sono Sanctus swiftly good on board to produce some top quality audio. Next to that the guys at Giphy offered their help by hosting animated gifs for each glyph on their site.

It's been a hell of a job. It was very exciting everytime a new contribution got delivered. Meeting new inspirational people along the way was an extra benefit. Experiment succeeded!

A big thank you to all the contributors for their amazing work and good vibes!

Franchise Animated won an award of excellence in the Communication Arts Typography Competition 2015, and is shortlisted in the Designs of the Year 2015.
