Creative Chemistry Branding

These logos were a freelance opportunity I had this year for a local hair salon. One of the managers commissioned me to make a logo and additional materials for a brand update. Below are the resulting pieces that they use for their website and social media.
During our first conversation, the client told me about some of the symbols and ideas they wanted to be represented in the logo. These included hair, an Erlenmeyer flask, and a color wheel, which I incorporated into the initial design sheet I sent back. The feedback was that it was a little too graphic and that they wanted more whimsy to it. I sent back some rough sketches with a gradient wheel and more organic hair that they found more appealing.
These images were the final drafts. I made more emphasis on the flask and focused less on the human aspect of the design. I gave them several options on stroke weight, gradient positioning and some logo choices. I was also curious if they wanted the flask to be filled with liquid. Ultimately they chose a blue-filled flask and a font from dafont.com. The font is called "Go Baaa" and is free for personal and commercial use.

I was eager to impress this client, but I learned to not put so much work into one option for a first draft and to be a little less literal in interpretation.
