Manchester United - Cartoon Champions

24/24 of Cartoon Champions this is it we are at the top of the mountain. Saving the best for last with the club who have won more trophies than any other club in English football, with a record twenty League titles Manchester United. @manchesterunited  Nicknamed "the Red Devils", the club was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902.

But where did the nickname come from? After the crash, Busby's Babes seemed inappropriate so a new name was sought. English rugby club Salford had toured France in the 1930s wearing red shirts and became known as "The Red Devils". Busby liked the sound of it, thinking a devil was more intimidating to opponents than angelic babes - and also had to reflect the fact the side would now feature more experienced players. He declared Manchester United should also be known as "The Red Devils" and soon the club began incorporating the devil logo into match programmes and scarves. In 1970, the club badge was redesigned, but now with a devil in the centre holding a pitch-fork.
The original crest was gleaned from the logo of the Manchester City Coat of Arms. All that remains of the original crest is the ship in full sail. The crest remained unaltered until the 1960s before being altered.

The new version had only extracted the shield, the stripes and the ship from Manchester City Council coat of arms. It also had a banner on top that wore the name 'Manchester United' while the one at the bottom read 'Football Club'. The christening of the United troops as the Red Devils in the late 60s by Matt Busby was a sharp indication of intent to break free from the image of blameless youth and modesty bestowed upon the young brigade through the famous nickname, 'Busby Babes.' This saw the new crest replace the three stripes with a devil. The new Manchester United crest, as we see today, came into being in 1998. The words 'Football Club' was ousted from the bottom of the logo and the word 'United' was demoted from its position on the top banner to the one at the bottom.
