“Prevailing public opinion states that Dublin has lost it’s integration to the natural habitat. This project aims to establish and maintain a bond between the urban and the natural. The first stage of this project was to find the balance between the anchoring of a man made structure into the landscape with dominating it, and since this entire project is about mediating nature to the general public, this observation platform should respect the natural habitat and create a minimal impact upon the species which are concerned. The site location, Dartmouth square, is one of a series formal Victorian residential squares which were planned and built in the late 19th century. This landscaped central square is flanked on all four sides by rows of brick Victorian terrace houses, the square providing the contrast between the strong urban character which exits in this dense part of the city. This square provides a green chain through south city centre, and allows fir the flourishing of natural vegetation and the establishment of an ecological corridor between itself and the grand canal which is in close proximity. The study of these urban habitats is essential to our understanding of the natural city.”
