The Creative Benefits of Boredom

With how fast-paced our lives have become, it would be impossible to find ourselves sitting idle with nothing to do. Boredom has traditionally been associated with a range of negative results, both within the workspace and outside it. However, according to ongoing studies, allowing yourself to sink into boredom may be the exact boost you need to get the creative juices flowing.

That is the implication of a group of researchers from the University of Central Lancashire focused on the link between feeling bored and getting creative. They tasked half of the subjects with completing a boring task like copying the number from the phone book and the other half with nothing. they were then asked to brainstorm as many uses as they could for a pair of plastic cups. The findings revealed that the participants who had a boring task (phone book task) came up with the most creative ideas. A separate study published in the Harvard business review found that boredom can boost creativity as it allows the brain to daydream and thus conceives original ideas.

A bored mind is always restless and dissatisfied. We automatically find ourselves yearning for something interesting and at the same time fulfilling. A bored mind moves into the Daydreaming state. The role of daydreaming is like a mediator between boredom and creativity is discussed and implications are outlined. the key to thinking more creatively is to make sure you have some time to wander. And if we, especially creative people, don't fall prey to the conventional distractions like binge-watching TV shows, we start coming up with unique ideas. That's why it's a good idea to track boredom sometimes. Amy Fries, author of daydreaming at work: Wake up your creative powers quoted “It is this ability to fully access our knowledge, memories, experiences, and imagination that helps lead us to those precious “lightbulb” moments when we least expect them”

Next time, instead of thinking what to do with your free time, try inducing boredom instead. Disconnecting from the internet, remove all other distractions, and try to sit and think. The aim to switch off your brain to an extent where the boredom is replaced by curiosity, then interest, and finally engrossment. And that's when you'll be at your creative best. Or, before your next creative meeting, try doing those boring tasks that fill up on your desk. you just might unlock your next big idea.

Thus, next time you find boredom crawling towards yourself, resist the urge to do something and rather let the boredom win over so that your brain can dream.

Connecting with cool stranger!

Instead of waiting for tables, standing in a queue for a drink, the action has moved elsewhere & on to other things.

One big change to have come in today’s lifestyle, in the past two years or so, is the concept of “party all night”. A bustling house party culture is the hallmark of any sophisticated city. In a city like Delhi, long dismissed as a cultural “village”, things have changed so much that not only are weekends designated for partying but every evening can be a Weekend.

Everyone is so high on spirits. It doesn’t matter whether the next day is working or not but because of long working hours and busy schedules, it’s not always possible to chill with your usual set of weekend friends, this is where Myscoot comes in the picture. So we thought, why can’t we just meet new people and that too in person in a relaxed setting?” asks Suyash, one of the Founders of Myscoot.

Myscoot curates home meet-ups for people who dare to form connections beyond their usual social circle. The company was founded in 2017 with just 4 team members, including Co-Founder and COO. The platform acts at a networking community in town, it enables people to discover house parties or host it, making money for a different theme party that the host decides on hosting. Themes like Sangria Saturday, Boardgames Unstrangering, Open Mic sessions. The entry to these home-hosted events is pretty nominal and starts at INR 300 for a 3 pm kinda evening and leads to INR 1000 for 8 pm kinda night. Myscoot parties are full of surprises starting from the kind of food to drinks to the games planned to break the ice between all the home guests. There is a strict 5-step verification process to screen users which helps ensure a safe environment for not only the people coming to the event but also the host of the party. ’ Never have I ever felt that Myscoot is a company working for profits, it feels like they are just a bunch of people trying to organise an exciting yet safe party for me’ says Vijeta Singh, a College student.

We’re told the good MyScoot folks join forces with the host to make chai and pakoras. because what’s the fun in ordering pizza, right? The houseguests are also free to get their supplies (potluck and BYOB) because sometimes these meet-ups can go on for hours and hours. All this done, the meet-ups kick start where everyone gets to meet every other guest and the foundation is laid for potential friendships/networks.‘I am new to the city and was looking for a way to make friends, Myscoot party helped me to not only make friends but I got a great job opportunity too’ said Anuradha Kalra, 23, Influencer.

So, if the thought of meeting with new people and listening to their stories excites you, you know who to contact. It’s about time we replace Snapchat and FaceTime with chatter on a couch. And, more than about time we started meeting and chilling with people who aren’t the regular faces we see but amazing nevertheless.

It’s literally as simple as that.
