The swordsman is posed in posta di donna, 'ward of the queen'. As described by 14th century fencing master Fiore dei Liberi, "This is the queen's guard, that can make all seven blows of the sword. And she can cover against all blows. And she breaks the other guards with the great blows she can make. And she is always quick to exchange a thrust."
