The Sun Tanning App

The Sun Tanning App

The Sun Tanning App is necessary as summer quickly approaches. It was designed to not only make people have a better experience tanning but also bring awareness to reading UV indexes. With global warming, the sun is impacting people more than ever. We felt that creating an app where people can time their tanning experience while knowing the UV index is a great way to allow people to be more conscious to their sun exposure.

In addition to safely staying in the sun, we went even further to wanting to incorporate people reflecting their skin type and sunscreen they use, a forecast of the max UV index for the week, a timer to go off so that people know when to flip to be “even”, and a page where people can journal their results so that they can have a better, personalized tanning experience the next time. See below for the following.

First things first...Color!

In order to get inspiration we decided to explore different palettes on Adobe color. We didn’t feel that looking up just tanning was enough for inspiration, so we brainstormed some more keywords including sunscreen, sunshine, relaxation, and summer.

Easy First Page

The main page of the app is the most important for starting the aesthetic. This determines if the user will be drawn in to continue using the app. We decided we wanted a big graphic image to represent the app and make it visually appealing right at the start.

Login Information

The first few boards are to gather information from the user. We wanted to make sure the login page was made as simple as possible. We wanted to give the user an area to type in their information in a consistent and simple way. By allowing the user to fill in their information, it creates an app that is personalized to the user. We decided the top three most important things to track from the user included their name, age, and location while they are tanning. These aspects will contribute further in the app to show them the amount of time they should be tanning.

Personalized Information

There was a lot of thought into how to display the user selecting their skin type on the app. We looked at how many makeup stores did it and decided to follow them. Our end result was to use color matching skin tones for the user to click on one that best represents themself. This gives an additional sense of playfulness, while also keeping it simple. The next display is for the user to then enter in which SPF they tend to use. This is highly important for the app to then consider how much time they should tan and when to reapply. By giving visual and detailed elements to the app, the user is guided in the easiest way.

Timer Ready!

The user is finally ready to TAN! We felt that the timer should be digital to continue our theme of simple and playful. At the 30:00 mark, there is a gentle alarm that will set off to aware the user to flip so that they don’t overdo one side. By the end, when the user hits 0:00 there is a success ding to help the user feel accomplished after their tanning experience.

Final Creation

The end goal for this app is to give the best possible experience for the user to tan. By allowing them to enter in their information, it allows for a personalized experience using The Sun Tanning App. The UV index max indicator allows for awareness of when the sun is at its strongest for most sunscreen application.

Since the days are getting hotter and longer due to quarantine, We wanted to give people an accessible way to tan and not result in skin damage. By user testing this app, it has allowed us to see which areas were easy to use and which parts of the app could be changed to make it more appealing.

We wanted to include a results page to allow the user to give feedback on the app. This way allows the app to be a great way to have a happy tan and a healthy body.
