The Coldest Arts is an inaugural fundraising arts event and live-painting tournament put together in collaboration of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. • Rho Kappa Lambda Chapter; Life Forever, LLC; and Art By Chris Williams to benefit the Rho Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation (RKLEF). Featuring the various talents of Alpha brothers and the Gwinnett and Greater Atlanta community as musicians, stand-up comedians, and spoken word poets, all headlined by acrylic painters facing off in "art-rounds" with the audience deciding the best of the best, it is truly the “Coldest of All Art Shows.”
Attendance: ~150
Attracted over $3500 worth of sponsorship value and generated over $1000 for chapter’s education foundation in inaugural event

Hello and welcome to the Tournament Recap of the inaugural Coldest Arts!
My name is DeForrest (@lifeforever3), the CA Committee Chairman, and I will be your host.

We gathered eight of the best artists in the ATL for a night of arts, charity, and friendly competition to paint in front of a live audience. They were each given paint, canvas, and 30 minutes to create an original work, and at the end of each round, the crowd chose their favorites to determine a winner, all leading to the chance to become our first champion!

FIRST ROUND:
The first ever round of The Coldest Arts set the stage for the night. When selecting our contestants, we aimed to show our audience just how amazing painting can be as a performance art, and the artists went even further beyond!

CleoSoul amazed with a unique rendition of Harley Quinn using flat colors and her own personal spin…

While Nate took to creating a striking, eccentric scene with various hues and mixes...

What originally impressed me about Ugo’s style was his technique of creating a vast environment within a small canvas, and he brought that signature in his competitive work...

In the end, “The Painter of Light” was determined to make sure the very first Coldest Arts round was won by an Alpha Phi Alpha brother and accomplished that with his professional use of complementaries and commanding Pharaoh rendering.
Winner: MUFASA

Myles H. (@lazy.stix) vs. SeeJones Creative (@seejoneswork) vs. Ice Sculptor (@ericbridgesartdotcom) vs. Sunshine (@khawkart2.0)
After our historic first ever painting round, we needed another contender for our championship.

SECOND ROUND:
I’m convinced the first round artists left a huge impression going forward… As they expertly and primarily showcased abstract concept and design, DETAIL was the name of the game in this second round!

Myles H. gave us a monochrome cityscape on top a pair of flat-color faces. I appreciated the bridge effect created with the smeared curves; a great accent against the many details of the buildings...

I’ve personally witnessed Sunshine’s fun but precise multi-brush painting technique at a previous competition, so I was glad when she accepted the invitation to compete for our championship. She didn’t disappoint when she created her cosmic and cool portrait that our audience couldn’t get enough of...

Ice Sculptor kept the colors simple but made the most of the limited time given with an educated use of layered brushstrokes, creating a silverback with legit texture and focused gaze...
.
Knowing SeeJones Creative for years, I knew he would be a strong ontender in this contest, bringing his signature portrait style. His use of contrast with the human form in just 30 minutes had to be a major aspect sending him to the championship round… But he wasn’t alone...

The competition brought its own twist as two artists each came away with 33% of our audience’s vote! Our first ever tie!
Winners: MYLES H. & SEEJONES CREATIVE

The skills escalated all throughout the night as all of the artists demonstrated not just a want, but a PASSION to be the best in Atlanta on December 7. But there could only be ONE CHAMPION… (Like, seriously, I told them we only had one title in the budget before all this got started.)

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND:
The committee and I had planned this event for months, but even we didn’t see the final round becoming a triple threat (not complaining since 3 is my number), as the original Coldest Artists wanted to impress and start something special. This championship round definitely set the foundation for years to come!

Myles H. brought a fight both in real life and on the canvas, giving us an uppercut we could all feel! When it comes to art, viewers tend to overanalyze the little details… not here. Myles H. made it clear he wanted to take home a belt!

Mufasa saw the writing on the wall from the second round and left his soul on display here, bringing precise brushstrokes to create a side profile as intense as the tournament itself. “The Painter of Light” has obviously studied how light shines on the face, using just one half-hour to show his mastery of chiaroscuro (look it up)...

But this night belonged to SeeJones Creative: Following up with another portrait, he painted a crowd favorite in Martin Luther King, Jr. and came away with over 70% of the audience vote, guaranteeing he was going to his Christmas parties this year with a nice big shiny belt!

Each of our artists went home with brand new canvas from @fredrixcanvas, the same as they competed on, but only one received the title…
