David Musselman's profile

Learning Experience in the Role of Man Who Is Homeless

With experience as a mediator spanning 25 years, David Musselman is a respected presence in the legal community of Sandy, Utah. As a mediator, David Musselman offers cost-saving alternatives to protracted court litigation.

With an interest in helping others, David Musselman formerly served as a bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he witnessed the struggles of people who are homeless. As reported in Salt Lake City’s Deseret News, Mr. Musselman sought to proactively broaden his understanding of people who are homeless. Working with a makeup artist and the founder of the nonprofit Soul Food USA, he transformed his appearance to someone down on his luck.

What Mr. Musselman found was that, even when he approached people to say “Happy Thanksgiving,” a majority did not respond to his presence. Despite not asking for money or food, several people requested that he leave the property.

Children were the most interested in the man and looked to their parents to see if they should interact with him. While some parents embraced positive interaction, others were “guarded and evasive.”

Mr. Musselman's lesson from the experience was that many people are lukewarm, indifferent, and not willing to take a stand on issues that make them uncomfortable. At the same time, Mr. Musselman was heartened by the generosity and kindness displayed by some people as they confronted an aspect of society that many try to avoid.
