Sabrina Dias is my first ever official freelance project outside of school. A friend of mine referred me to her and told me that she was looking for some design work. Sabrina and I met over a coffee to discuss how she was looking to expand her business by authenticating her brand. She then explained to me the details of her services, such as focusing on sustainable development and building solutions for corporate social responsibilities.

I began doing plenty of research into sustainable development within the mining industry to understand exactly what it is and what it means. I also looked at how current consulting and mining companies presented themselves to discover any visual opportunities we could take with SDC's brand. During my research, I started sketching rough concepts of how her logo and wordmark might come to be. From the drawings I filtered a few directions for Sabrina and I to discuss again over some coffee.

I gathered her initial responses and thoughts, which lead to another round of truly exhaustive ideation. Like before, I touched up a few of the ideas into fairly final logo designs with stationery application examples. Sabrina and I agreed on the one option that we thought would work best for her. So, from there I refined our choice to begin developing a brand, which included typography, iconography, colour, layout, etc.

We decided that a wordmark and logo would both be important to have for SDC's brand. It was necessary to have a wordmark to highlight Sabrina's name, but an identifiable logo was also key for smaller applications that could supplement the full identity. Many of the ideas that Sabrina and I discussed inspired the final design direction that embodied the major qualities of Sabrina and her growing business.

SDC's approach is structured to build informative and thorough advice. Sabrina and her team keep a forward thinking attitude to each project, and always seek windows of opportunity. Her logo and wordmark had to fit within a corporate setting, so they are fairly rigid and modern; however, we also made sure there was enough personality introduced into the brand that reflects Sabrina as a person. With all of this in mind, we were able to finalize the SDC brand and create materials such as a business card, leaflet, a custom brochure and website.
