Who is big cat rescue?
Mostly well known for their appearance in the Netflix documentary tiger king where they gained some rather negative attention, Big cat rescue is so much more than what has been portrayed. Opening in 1992 with the ambition to make a change, big cat rescue was and still is credited as a 4 star rated non profit organisation. Big cat rescues' main goal is to end the trade of wild cats and with their sanctuary being a place for these wild cats who have been rescued and rehabilitated to love more freely.

The plan

The aim of this process is to take Big cat rescues website and give it a whole new makeover. This will hopefully allow for more attraction and for users to have a clearer direction when coming to Big cat rescues site. Through a simple UX process a clear vision will be created and then from there this site can be built within wordpress using PHP.

User stories

LYN : Lyn is a 50 year old vet who has a passion for animal welfare, she regularly views non profit organisations (NPO'S) that are animals. When she comes to these types of websites she expects to know straight away what their mission is and what they're doing/done to help. From that she can make clear decisions if it is something she also wants to help with.

LILY : Lily is a 16 year student who is hoping to be a vet someday. She has a love for animals and is always looking fo volunteer opportunities. When looking for volunteer opportunities on NPO's she wants the website to be easy to understand and navigate so she can find what she's looking for quickly without hassle. confusing websites are too frustrating and become  a hassle.

ALEX : Alex is an entrepreneur that helps NPO get more funding to help their cause. He is constantly looking at various NPO websites and one thing he find to be frustrating is unclear layout and hierarchy of information. He want to know where to go and wants their mission statement to be clear. Not only that but contact information should be easily found otherwise he cant get in touch.

User journeys

LYN : Lyn will come to the main home page and from there make her decision on whether this is a site worth looking at more. The first thing she sees is. the most important part and is how she makes her decision. if she doesn't know what the sites mission is by just looking at the home page she cant be bothered looking at the rest of the site.

ALEX: Alex is looking at non profit sites all the time and the ones that are confusing and don't have a simple layout are too frustrating to navigate. He will be mainly looking for contact information and wants to be able to easily navigate to there.

LILY: Lily likes simple and effective sites that aren't messy and are modern. Being young she's drawn to good imagery and easy to understand mission statements. She wants to know whether volunteering is a possibility when she comes to these sites so therefore knowing where to find this out is important if she struggles to find this information she easily gives up.

How might we attract users to keep viewing the site?
- Have a strong call to action
- bold imagery
- Easy to understand mission statement that gets the point across
- an eye catching home page

How might we get people to get involved ?
- Strong call to action
- Powerful statement on why people need to help
- show imagery of the cats and about them
- Donate button on display
- easy access contact

User testing results
A/B testing :

There were two designs for the home page and two design directions that were considered. I tested both pages on 5 people with the majority saying the more blocky style home page was the better option. Two users felt the more spaced out home page was more clean looking however, the other users felt that this homepage lacked originality and was too typical to most website layouts. The other users felt the other direction would allow for more creativity when it came to design.
The logo was also tested with two different designs with all users feeling the first design was simplistic and went well with the overall design better than the other logo.
User testing:

First wireframes :

user one : User one felt the overall design was done very well with the block style really making the design stand out. they felt the design had a lot of strengths and didn't need much improvement except for the footer which the felt was unbalanced which confused this user. This was improved with the footer being changed with more balance between elements taken into consideration.

user two : user two felt the design was well put together and really though the style for this particular theme of the site worked well. The only thing they pointed out was an error in the newsletter and that there was no submit button which was easily improved upon.

user three: User three also felt the same as the other user when it came to the design choices. The only improvement the had was the nav bar felt unbalanced and boring compared to the rest of the design. The suggested putting home on the side to even out the links but instead the nav bar was changed all together and was a big improvement.

High fi :

user one & user two : Both users felt there was nothing that needed to be improved upon and they felt the design was striking and well put together. They felt the colour scheme was bold and image choices really brought everything together.

user three: User three had some critiques on a few things to improve the site further. These were that some of the text needed more line space as there wasn't enough breathing room. Also with the nav bar before the change they stated it could be a difficult nav bar to create in word press, with this in mid the nav bar was changed and may possibly change again depending on the difficulty of the new nav bar. Finally user three felt that more bold typography could be used to really make certain text stand out to make a statement.

Below is a figma mockup of the UX design. The screen it is displayed on is a macbook pro and the design was made for a desktop therefore some areas of the design are cut of when they should be showing
