Tolstoy's "Vampire" (1841)

The "Vampire" ("Упырь") was written by Russian count Alexis Tolstoy, an older cousin of the famous Leo Tolstoy, and published in 1841. Novella was translated into English and known as the "Vampires: Stories of the Supernatural."

Some critics say that working on the "Vampire" Alexis Tolstoy was inpired by his uncle Antoniy Pogorelskiy, the author of "The Little Black Hen, or Underground People", first published in 1829 and originally written for his little nephew.
