How I searching Visual style for game about Women's Wrestling
I want to share with you very simple but useful method for searching Visual style for you game. And as an example I will use game project about Women's Wrestling.
Okay, I am serious :) And we will start with FGVS.
What is FGVS?
FGVS is a Future Game Visual Style. It is an image or images in low resolution which looks like your imagined game. It's like screenshot of ready game but in low resolution. So you can't see tiny details, pixels but you can see and feel that this is exactly needed game. It's guide or starting point for your final design.
Future — because you only need to imagine it yet :)
As a result you will get something like this bottom image.

When you need FGVS?
1. When you starting your game project and have no visual style yet.
2. When you created some game art already but can't create solid style from different parts.
3. When your client ask you to create UI or game art but have no visual style or references.
How to start when you have nothing?
Okay most of the time nothing is not exactly nothing. You have game genre, mechanics and other core things about your game (if no you better go away from this project, really).
New game will not appear in vacuum it will be surrounded by a lot of other games. So you need to learn the visual field.
My sample game was about women's wrestling so I started to search games with "Wrestling" tag.
Games in Google Play related to Wrestling theme.
Pinterest board
Start from searching similar games on market. Find similar game, save screenshots or promo images on Pinterest board (as I do) or on your local drive. Try to find different samples in one genre. Place interesting key elements also. Can you include objects not related to games? Yes, sure.

Next create Style board.
Style board
I know it's a lot of different style boards all over there so I need to clarify what I mean.
You need to find extreme points of visual style on your visual field.
For example you can grade all visuals from 2D to 3D and from cartoon to realistic. Sure you can choose any different grades depending on your project.
Then you create system of coordinate with your grades and place extreme images first. In my case I placed most cartoon 2D and most realistic 3D images first.
Then you can place all in between. How much images you will need depends on how detailed answer you want to get in result.

When you finished you will have a map!
This is your visual field for your future game. Where is your future game spot? It's your decision and vision.
But now you have an options and can describe variants with image references, you can discuss your vision with other team members. So you have a tool to choose.
Now you can ask your client:
- What spot you prefer, where you envision your game?
From this point you don't need to blindly try different styles. You can focus. And most of all you can reject some new ides with arguments. Sure design can changing during the project but you will know where are you are and where you came from.
Believe me it can save you tons of time and save your deadline.
Next is more usual stages.
Wireframes
I didn't spent much time here. Just used clients wireframe and implemented some own ideas.
Sure you can be wild here and create really different structures for different styles.

Style images
If did all stages before it's not much work here. I will describe by example.
For my future game about women's wrestling I decided to create 3 variants.
1. 2D cartoon GUI but with semi realistic 2D characters and backgrounds.
2. 2D but a bit less cartoony GUI with semi realistic 3D characters and backgrounds.
3. 3D realistic characters with "serious" GUI
2D cartoon GUI but with semi realistic 2D characters and backgrounds.
So I found images on my Pinterest board with needed style elements - buttons, backgrounds, characters, symbols, panels and simply collage them.
I did try to create impression of final game. I even used texts from copypasted images, why not. Later you will be able to spent hours drawing cool and original icons. Just get style approval first.

That's it. I have 3 different images to discuss with client before spending hours on different GUI elements or game art.

I hope this information will help you in your game projects also.
Don't hesitate to comment :)
Thank you for watching!
