This year's International Society of Typographic Designers' brief #6 was 'Unsung Heroes and Heroines.' The brief was to create an informative typograhpic experience that brought a chosen 'Unsung Hero' to life by documenting success, achievements and life stories. This unsung hero could be a family member, an every day working man or a person who had helped another in a time of need; someone who deserves more recognition.
For my entry, I chose to base the story of an unsung hero around my Grandfather, Thomas Mearns. Thomas served in Africa during World War II, worked on the docks of Hull and was a great father figure and husband.
Rather than portraying the stereotypical story of a soldier during the war who fought on the front lines, I wanted to show the more casual, day-to-day story of a man who had served during the war and then of how he returned home to his family and friends, followed by the rest of his life story as a hero from his family's perspective.
