Ludwig van Beethoven

Since childhood I played the cello in a symphony and chamber orchestra and to this day, I have performed solo on the piano. Beethoven's sonatas have always been my favourites, so I chose his life and work as the theme of my dissertation.
The story of the book tells the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven. The book, which is for children from the age of 10, shows the influences of classical music on future musical stages. Full page illustrations depict life events that influenced the composer in his work. Paintings are the mainstay and the major factor in telling the story not to overload young readers with professional text. The story is narrated chronologically and divided into several chapters. They show important events and places in the Czech Republic that Beethoven visited. The others discuss his work from piano sonatas, through chamber works, to symphonies.
The cover of the book points out Beethoven's love for nature, which we feel in several of his works, e.g. the 6th Symphony - Pastoral.
illustrations and spreads
Spatula technique allowed me to point out brisk movements of musicians and its edge at the same time supported straight shapes of musical motifs and architecture.
Some pages are graphically supplemented by abstract illustrations. They analyse the melodic line of a particular composition. They are printed with piano hammers from Viennese mechanics, which brings readers closer to this topic.

The book also includes more descriptive professional illustrations about the then technique of playing, musical instruments and analysis of Beethoven's works. This illustration, for example, shows the difference between the then Viennese piano mechanics and today's English one.
The main chapters about symphonies are supplemented by prints of timpani mallets. These abstract motifs beside other things help the illustrations to follow each other on both sides in colour and composition.
The illustrations also include examples of the exteriors and interiors of the major theatres and chateaux where Beethoven performed or conducted.
There are often left white areas of paper and fine lines of spatula in the paintings of musicians. This method of composition should lighten an illustration and a tool and evoke its sound.
The book is accompanied by landscape paintings with the views of cities and scenes which Beethoven's symphonies tell about, or they are connected with his trips to the Czech spas where he wrote these symphonies.
The colour of the illustrations changes with reading of the book according to the development of the author's work. Beethoven never heard the latest works, which was highly reflected in their rendition, so I also changed the colour to darker tones.
