TRIUMF Illustrated Infographic

ILLUSTRATED INFOGRAPHIC FOR TRIUMF
THE PROJECT

TRIUMF operates a cluster of radiation testing facilities under the label “PIF & NIF” (for Proton Irradiation Facilities and Neutron Irradiation Facilities). The aim of the artwork is to create an example for new Research Story pieces to be displayed along the Public Tour route onsite, as well as for use in all PIF & NIF printed, digital, and online collateral for business communications.

In this project, I worked with Diana Castaneda, Senior Graphic Designer and my mentor at TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre, and Camille Belanger-Champagne who is my client from TRIUMF Irradiation Facilities, PIF & NIF. This project involved finding an art direction, week by week iterations of the infographics, and delivery of multiple file sizes and formats. Project briefing and installation was coordinated by Jesse Abney, TRIUMF's Public Programs Manager.
PIF & NIF BACKGROUND

TRIUMF operates a cluster of radiation testing facilities under the label “PIF & NIF” (for Proton Irradiation Facilities and Neutron Irradiation Facilities). The bulk of facility use is done by commercial users such as space agencies, satellite companies, avionics and automotive manufacturers, power and network management as well as electronic parts manufacturers. Testing of these parts under radiation conditions is a critical part of the quality assurance process and helps ensure that planes operate safely, bank servers don’t lose information, etc.

PIF & NIF also contribute to the research mandate of TRIUMF and some beam hours are set aside every year for research projects supported by TRIUMF’s Experimental Evaluation Committee.

The significance of this operational capability needs to be captured in a visually engaging and easy to understand information graphic. The breadth and diversity of the user group and the societal significance of the work done at the facilities should be highlighted by the design of the infographic and other deliverables.

TESTIMONIAL

Working with Janani has been a joy. Her work ethics, amazing talent, and constant kindness, never cease to impress us. Her infographic for TRIUMF’s Proton and Neutron Irradiation Facilities, not only fulfilled our expectations, but also considerably raised the bar for visual standards along the route of the Public Tour of TRIUMF.

REFLECTION

When I first began this project, I was worried about my lack of knowledge in the subject I would be depicting. This project was a real world problem that needed a design intervention, and I felt incredibly proud that I was able to deliver. I truly could not have done it without the help from the lovely Diana Castaneda and Camille Belanger-Champagne! Their dedication and motivation pushed me forward. The critiques were incredibly useful, specific, and only helped me develop my skills as a designer, illustrator and thinker. Thank you both so much for this beautiful opportunity!
