Rabat has been the capital of Morocco since 1956 with the seat of government and the residence of the king; at the same time, the city is the capital of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. Rabat is located on the Atlantic coast on the southern bank of the Bou-Regreg opposite the neighbouring town of Salé. The Rabat-Salé conurbation is divided into four prefectures; the prefecture of Rabat comprises a built-up area with the administrative and business centre.

Rabat ist seit 1956 die Hauptstadt Marokkos mit dem Regierungssitz und der Residenz des Königs; gleichzeitig ist die Stadt Hauptort der Region Rabat-Salé-Kénitra. Rabat liegt an der Atlantikküste am südlichen Ufer des Bou-Regreg gegenüber der Nachbarstadt Salé. Das Ballungsgebiet Rabat-Salé ist in vier Präfekturen aufgeteilt; die Präfektur Rabat umfasst ein überbautes Gebiet mit dem Verwaltungs- und Geschäftszentrum.
