Civil Rights Movment

March on Washington, April 28, 1963
What was the Civil Rights Movement?
The Civil Rights Movement took place between the years of 1954 & 1968 and served as a time of crisis for blacks in America. During the 19th century blacks faced several hardships including discrimination, segregation, racism, and stereotypes. There was a struggle for social justice and change, and the black community was constantly trying to find a solution to this national problem. During the Civil Rights Movement, several events occurred including: Little Rock Mine, The Freedom Riders, Bloody Sunday, The March on Washington, and Jim Crow Laws. These events were lead by many significant figures who advocated on behalf of the black community. These people included famous people like Rosa Parks, Dr. King, Malcolm X, The Greensboro 4, W.E.B Du Bois, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth; all who are well known for their courage and bravery during this historical time. In addition to these events, many laws were passed including the Civil Rights Act which gave blacks many privileges such as desegregated schools, the right to vote, and it outlawed segregation. This act was a result of the Civil War, and the previous dehumanization towards blacks in America.
Interview
This interview was conducted on May 12, 2020 of Kathy Parker (grandmother)
What did I learn?
When coming up with questions for the interview with my grandmother, I found it very easy. I didn't really think that I'd have any "real" wonders about the Civil Rights Movement because we had learned about it in school. But hearing the stories from someone who and been in apart of the movement was astonishing. As a young black female, I face many problems in life. People have turned me down for my age, my skin color, my hair, my voice, and my sex. And I thought this was challenging, and it is. But hearing about the struggles my grandmother had to face opened up a whole new world for me, and I got to relate what she said, back to how things are in the 21st century. People are still discriminated upon, stereotypes are still held, and injustices still happen. I hope that from this information and current knowledge, I can help others like me who still face these issues. I learned so much more than what I learned in school and having this new information makes me want to explore and gain more knowledge on the subject.
