Causes and Consequences of Poor Social Wellness in Teen

Former basketball player and coach John Egan is an active supporter of his grandchildren’s sports activities with North Attleboro youth leagues. John Egan also coordinates extracurricular activities for Bishop Stang High School, a short drive from North Attleboro. He initiated and planned an annual dance event for the school’s sophomores and freshmen and advocates for the importance of teenage social well-being.

Adolescents who have healthy relationships with their family and peers experience high levels of social well-being. On the other hand, teens who have difficulty interacting with others or making friends can experience higher levels of anxiety and depression than their better-adjusted peers.

There are many reasons why teens may have low levels of social wellness, including a lack of social skills, emotional immaturity, or difficulty reading social cues. This can result in a lack of meaningful friendships or short-lived relationships, aggressive behavior, or unhealthy interactions. In some cases, young people with poor social wellbeing can become disconnected from school and underperform academically.
