"The Original" exhibition -
High Culture Vs Popular Culture
-
Location: NTU Centre for Contemporary Art

This venue of the exhibition is located at NTU CCA and it aims to raise awareness in getting consumers to appreciate high culture art alongside with its pop culture influences. It also seeks to explore the acceptable extent of the copying of artworks. The artworks are be placed in a side by side comparison with the apparels, the museum labels will be printed on the price tag/ receipt tagged to the individual pieces, this is to elevate the ‘retail’ experience of the exhibition. The setting of the space is a retail store/ factory. A straightforward idea of representing commercialisation as a form of reverse psychology, to “encourage” the audience to copy artworks and have their own stand.

The exhibition is laid out based on the production, packaging and retail of an apparel. The exhibits are placed according to 5 key areas – ‘The History of how Art and Fashion collide’, apparel which are ‘inspired of/ collaborated with’ in the Retail section, ‘Music Videos’ in the Packing area, the apparel which ‘ripped off’ artworks and apparels which paid homage to artists. The exhibition seeks to question the value of the original artwork if they are so easily reproduced?
