Actually I hate explaining of artworks, because art should speak for itself. But at the same moment I am fond of cool presentations and especially - white words on the dark background. Sooo... I tried to share my vision of what is happening nowadays. This work was done for the CGI competition on 3ddd
The topic of contest was "quarantine". I did not want to fantasize about the apocalypse, especially since I was tired of this direction after working with ZOMBIENIKE in previous project. As a result, I came up with the idea of social viruses, which crowded the heads of a large number of people.
The main slogan of the artwork: "IS ANYBODY HOME?" or "ARE YOU ALL THERE?" INSTAVIRUS, PORNHUBVIRUS, TIKTOKVIRUS, PANICVIRUS, YOUTUBENETFLIXVIRUS.
cunning BACKSTAGE OF "IS ANYBODY HOME?"
This work was done in 2 weeks. First, all the characters were made separately, and only then they were distributed along the cut of the human head. The process as a whole is simple, but painstaking. This time I had no references, except for the general impressions of many works that I had previously seen in this style
PIPELINE
- Frankly saying I don't really want to repeat myself. The making of these cute characters is almost the same as zombienike. So you can take a look at more detailed description of process here
- I used child basemesh from DAZstudio for viruses' bodies with some shape changes such as length of arms and legs. Then I've made two keyframes with different poses (T-pose and final pose) in order to export Open Collada file with animation, to make clothes in Marvelous designer.
- I've modeled one virus ear, made lot's of copies and merged with head mesh( it's almost the same for all viruses). Then I used dynomesh and zeremesher to get good topology for heads. After that I unwrapped the model with standard UVmaster, keeping polygroups. After this step I draw texture for each character's head with brands in Mari, bleached them to make displacement map for zbrush.
- Clothes were imported from marvelous designer, zremeshed and unwrapped, keeping all polygroups. Detailing was made with some wrinkle and stitches brushes. Textures for clothes were made in Mari.
- Other objects were downloaded from 3ddd and slightly remodeled and retextured.
-Then everything were eported to 3ds Max and rendered with Corona Renderer. There is absolutely no secrects or hard technics in rendering. Everything is made by eye. Basically all materials are standard, adjusted by albedo, normal and displacement map. SSS material is used for heads. Lighting in all scenes is very simple. There are 3 sphere lights around each virus and one light behind to illuminate the background and make a small halo around the head.
- The main shot with head cut took the most time. I was really hurry, because only two days were left. So the hardest thing was to be in time and come up with what the apartment of each virus should look like with its characteristic and individual details. I am 50% satisfied with this picture, but overall I am pleased with this artwork.
