UP CYCLING SINGLE USE PLASTIC

Up cycling single-use plastic: A hand- stitched wallet inspired by The craft of Kantha

Kantha is an embroidery craft done in the eastern regions on Indian subcontinent. The technique involves stacking of different layers of old saris and fabrics, stitched together to make a thin piece out of which various products like quilts, cushions, etc. are made. There are different types of Kantha stitches done according to the product made.

Single-use plastics are those which are used once and are thrown away or recycled. The poly bags which we use are Petroleum based plastic which is non biodegradable and usually goes into a landfill where it is buried or it gets into the water and finds it’s way into the ocean.

I collected poly bags from around the house and stitched them together to make thicker sheets. Different sheets were then folded and hand stitched to make a wallet.
