If Tigers Do Not Come
At last, the winner of the Palettes & Quills Chapbook Contest 2012, If Tigers Do Not Come by Meg Cowen and chosen by J. P. Dancing Bear, is now available. Here's the final cover I designed for it:

The cover image is titled "Tiger Crow" and was created by Joy Christine Mlozanowski.

This cover did not come easy. It was very light in color in some place so I had to manipulate some of the contrasts and other things, and actually paint some sun light into the picture. It was quite blanched out otherwise. I need it to print well.

Also, there were many alternatives before the perfect artwork was found. For instance:
This cover, which I like, is too biblical, which is fine except for how it relates to the poems in the book. This cover didn't come easy, either. Since the dimensions were a bit odd, I had to perform some painting in Photoshop. I might use this cover for Redactions or another book. I do like it.

So I went back to read the poems again, and I read this image in the book:

which looks like an indigo scarab
   from satellite view.

That's the second stanza from "Rowing, In Negative." This prompted a number of other cover varations, and it is also when I realized how limited my self-taught Photoshop skills are.
And then a sepia version, which is a semi-complicated endeavor in Photoshop:
There were many other versions of covers, but I must have deleted those.

In the end, there is a terrific new collection of poems out in the world, and I am happy to have been a part of it.

Here are the front and back covers as they are now. The trim size is 5.5" x 8.5" inches and was printed by BookMobile.
A list of second place, third place, finalists, and semi-finalists to the contest can be found here: http://www.palettesnquills.com/Winners.htm.
