FRAGILE ARCHITECTURES
‘Fragile Architectures' explores the significance of preserving historical authenticity and integrity. While it is important to protect historical sites, it is also vital that they can age and weaken over time. Being able to see the time that it has survived, the memories that it carries, the fragility of a structure that once stood strong and proud, allows us to appreciate these monuments more, as well as the transient nature of time. Each piece within ‘Fragile Architectures’ creates spaces through patchwork, a technique that represents mending and repair, however, the incorporation of loose threads aims to convey that we should let the feebleness of these structures be seen. Through miniaturisation and the use of fabric to create these sculptures, the idea of fragility is heightened, especially as architecture is often related to large and strong structures. Placed upon a white clay platform, the pieces are interpreted as momentous artefacts, with the traces of these structures engraved on the clay for when the sculptures collapse. The cause of architectural decay is often over time and due to environmental impacts, this is reflected within the eco and rust dye on the fabric of these sculptures.
