A calligrapher and painter trained in the Chinese ink wash tradition.
Hong Wai's works transport ink into the contemporary realm, touching on ink painting but breaking free from the limits and difficulties of the ink medium itself (which rarely lends itself to the intricate).
Breaking with the ideology of traditional literati painting, Hong Wai's work is not representational like the traditional ink portraits of Tang Dynasty ladies, the so-called 'paintings of beauties', but more subtle and delicate depicting women's jardin secret: lingerie , high heels, négligés... symbols of womanhood and women captured straightforwardly by a woman artist.
