Major Project Vinyl Record Luggage
This was my Major project during my final year as student.
The original brief was;
Identify the need for a new design.
I have deep interests in the music industry and so my search for the need for a new design revolved around this industry, research into it while speaking with members of the community and conducting surveys led me to my refined brief;
To design a new piece of luggage specifically for transporting vinyl records which assisted the user by allowing them to dig through records at the perfect anthropometric height, limiting any neck and back injuries from bending down too often, and assisted the user in being able to read record labels in dark and low lit environments such as nightclubs.
My design was completely user centric, with myself liaising with the target market often to ensure it was designed in their best interests.
Key design choices were made by the target market such as its aesthetics, and case type, with hard shell being chosen for its protection properties as well as its cool and slick aesthetics.
The design features 4 casters which are lockable to prevent the case rolling away, and with the record box placed on top it has a perfect working elbow height, courtesy of anthropometric research. It also features an extendable handle for easy transport while walking with the case, this too extends to a perfect anthropometric height.
The product features a LED flexible light, with a re-chargeable long lasting Lithium Polymer battery which would could last for a number of uses before needing to be recharged again. The light is designed with simplicity in mind with it having a simple hook/clip design which features a rubber pad for grip. The on/off switch is situated on the head of the light for ease of use also.
The design features strong and robust aluminium edge construction with Steel rivets to provide a strong and stable platform for the record box. These features paired with a polycarbonate shell make it extremely tough and ready for whatever abuse can be thrown at it, which could be a lot in the nightlife industry.
The design also features a strong and robust lockable steel latch with keys to lock. This prevents any of your valuable records or other equipment being stolen during transport or while away from your belongings.
The design features strong and bold graphics to create a brand affinity, and it gives my target market a relatable talking point and also serves as free marketing for my product.
