Kiki Smith is an emblematic artist of the New York contemporary art scene. The human body, female figures and symbiosis with nature are recurring motifs in her work. Kiki Smith proposes a new way of exploring the social, cultural and political role of women.
After seeing her retrospective at La Monnaie de Paris, her monumental tapestries left an impression on me. I was particularly interested in how she works with colour and texture. It immediately made me think of the universe of Proenza Schouler. First of all, by honouring major female icons of contemporary art. But also through the graphic aesthetics that the forms could have.
So I started with details from her tapestries to make motifs that will then blend with Proenza Schouler’s iconic bags.
